ʻŌlelo Noʻeau are Hawaiian proverbs that often offer wisdom for a person to live by. The ones chosen are intended to apply particularly to your learning of the Hawaiian language in hopes to keep up your motivation.
This month's proverb is simple, and VERY well-known! Still, I'll provide a breakdown for your understanding.
- Ma = in
- Hana = Work, activity, deed; To do, make, work
- ʻike = Knowledge, experience; To know, experience, see, feel
All together:
In the work, the knowledge.
In working, there is knowing.
There is knowledge in work.
Note:
If the structure doesn't make sense to you, imagine there is a comma: Ma ka hana, ka ʻike.
Or, supply Aia: Aia, ma ka hana, ka ʻike. OR Aia ka ʻike ma ka hana.
