Do it yourself! Living on the mainland, it's hard to find certain goodies that are commonly enjoyed in Hawaiʻi. No longer - check out the subsequent articles to add a little Hawaiian delight to your own home. All ingredients and tools necessary are readily available in stores on the maindland or online.
*These articles are largely in Hawaiian, for my practice as well as yours, but they all have items and a concise list of steps in English. Learn some new Cooking Vocab along the way!*
Haupia is a widely known coconut treat enjoyed across the islands - and you only need three simple ingredients!
I was inspired by this video of an old Hawaiian woman demonstrating how her family prepared haupia in her childhood, all the while speaking native Hawaiian. Following her instruction, I went through the challenging process of opening fresh coconuts and grating their meat by hand. Oof!
Though not unique to Hawaiʻi, coconut oil was
(and still is) used as a lotion for skin and a moisturizer for hair. This usage was common across all of Polynesia and continues to spread to the rest of the world.
BONUS:
Included at the end is some information about a Hawaiian/Tahitian type of perfume created with the help of coconut oil!

You might see this coconut shell as a cool-looking mug to drink a Mai Tai or a Piña Colada from, but Hawaiʻi has other traditional uses for these. Here, I'll list these historical applications, as well as their original Hawaiian names, and show how to make them!
