Haʻawina Kamaliʻi

Below is a selection of academic content designed for keiki that are fluent in Hawaiian but only have English homework. Now, young kids (and, perhaps, adults looking to branch out their vocabulary?) can have these cool worksheets (haʻawina) to learn with and have fun with - pick a topic, print out a sheet (ʻaoʻao), and hoʻopaʻa haʻawina!

For the makua learning Hawaiian as a second language, short explanations/essential vocab lists are provided to help you along!

MAHALO NUI LOA:

Math Salamanders was kind enough to let us use many of their worksheets and translate them into Hawaiian. Visit their website for even more math activities! For the ones used below, a link to the original worksheet is included. If you can't figure out what the Hawaiian says, compare with the English of the original!

NOTE:

* This page is not yet fully completed. I will add more as I make more!
* I'm starting with elementary math. I plan to make sheets of other topics as well!

* Most of these are written without diacritics - so far. I'll go back add versions with diacritics (kahakō and ʻokina) at a later date. Until then, try to see if you can read the instructions anyways! Can you figure them out? If you can, you're a large step closer to being able to read old nūpepa, and that opens up a whole new world!
* Currently, most of these are holiday themed. For now, enjoy some Halloween math!

These worksheets practice Skip Counting!

In English, we use the terms: "count by [number]" : count by 2s, count by 5s, count by 10s, etc.

In Hawaiian, we use the terms: lele hapa[number] :
lele hapalua, lele hapalima, lelehapa'umi, a pēlā aku.

Papa kuhikuhi = Graph

     > often shortened to Pakuhi

ʻAukā = Bar

     > Including a "bar a soap," a "gold bar," even poop! I'll leave it to your imagination how that came to be :3

Color the right answer!

With these worksheets, there will be a series of squares, each with its own equation. Once you have the answer, the key (kī ) will show you which color to color that square according to that answer. Finish the whole sheet and discover the hidden figure!

Coordinates

For the older student, these worksheets focus on plotting coordinates on a graph. For some, you do the plotting. For others, the plotting is already done and you have to provide the coordinates. Maybe they'll be random, or maybe they'll make a shape!

* Vocab sheet provided (no English, context only)
* Haʻawina with diacritics and modern terms/spelling
* Haawina with no diacritics and older terms/spelling
