I've been having trouble for months getting the spelling of numbers such as ʻUmikūmamālua (12) memorized, for some reason it seems to be a mental tongue twister that I keep on failing at. So, I was amazed last night to see it can also be spelled as ʻumi kūmālua, which is the version of 12 in the Hawaiian dictionary at Ukulau They use 'umi as a separate word then kūmā with the number added. Much simpler to recall!
I did a practice of Telling-Time on duo this morning and although ʻUmikūmamālua is the only offering in the drop down, ʻumi kūmālua was accepted as correct.
Do folk in Hawaii actually use duo's 'long' way of spelling numbers, it seem that the shorter 2 word version trips off the tongue far easier?
